Capturing Friendship and Spirit: Individual Cheer Portraits at CyPark High
There’s something truly magical about capturing the energy, friendship, and spirit of high school cheerleaders, and this session with three best friends at CyPark High School in Cypress, Texas was no exception. From the moment we arrived on the football field, their excitement and bond were infectious. Each girl brought her own personality to the session, but together they created a dynamic energy that made every shot come alive. We started with individual portraits of each girl in her cheer uniform, letting them shine on the field with pom poms and big smiles. These moments weren’t just about perfect poses—they were about capturing who they are as athletes, friends, and young women stepping into a memorable season of their lives.
Laughter, Pom-Poms, and Family Support: The Joy of Group Shots
Once the individual portraits were done, we transitioned to group shots, which were my favorite part of the session. You could instantly see the closeness they share—the inside jokes, the gentle nudges, the laughter that comes from years of shared practices, pep rallies, and late-night homework sessions together. Cheer has a way of bringing people together, and these three girls clearly support and lift each other both on and off the field. Even in the cold, windy weather—temperatures barely in the low 40s—they stayed engaged, smiling, and playful. Whenever two of the girls were waiting for the third to finish her shots, they wrapped up in warm blankets and kept each other entertained, their friendship shining as much as their uniforms.
The parents were a huge part of making this session fun and dynamic. They helped us create movement in the photos, tossing pom poms into the air and encouraging the girls to laugh, jump, and interact naturally. Their support allowed the girls to feel confident and playful, which always translates into the best images. You could see how their bond has been strengthened not only by cheerleading but by the loving guidance of their families. Even though it was chilly and windy, the warmth of their friendship made the day feel much brighter than the thermometer suggested. By the end of the session, it was clear these photos would capture not just a season of cheer, but a moment in their lifelong friendship.
Chasing the Light: Using the Sun to Create Warm, Glowing Portraits
From a photography perspective, this session presented an interesting challenge. Shooting at 3:30 pm meant we were working with direct sunlight that could create harsh shadows if not handled carefully. In situations like this, I like to lean into the sun’s power rather than fight it, using it as a natural backlight to create a warm, glowing rim around the subjects. By positioning the girls so the sun illuminated the edges of their hair and uniforms, I was able to create a flattering, professional look while also keeping the images bright and airy. Backlighting also adds depth and energy to the photos, which is perfect for capturing athletic moments like jumps, kicks, and mid-pom-pom action. Even on a cold, windy day, the light gave the images a warm, sunlit feel that contrasts beautifully with the crisp air.
Friendship, Fun, and Unforgettable Moments: Why Cheer Brings Them Together
Cheerleading is more than just a sport—it’s a community, a source of confidence, and a place where friendships are forged. Watching these three girls interact on the field was a reminder of how much joy and connection sports can bring. Their playful energy, encouragement for each other, and pure happiness during the session created images that are authentic and timeless. As a photographer, my job is to highlight those connections while working with natural light, movement, and the environment around them. This session wasn’t about stiff poses or forcing smiles—it was about letting the girls be themselves, enjoying their time together, and capturing the magic that comes naturally when friends are doing what they love.
By the end of the session, the combination of their laughter, athleticism, and shared bond was palpable in every frame. Even though it was cold, windy, and late in the afternoon, the warmth of their friendship and the joy of cheerleading shone through each photo. These portraits are more than just images—they are a celebration of connection, dedication, and the moments that define high school life. For anyone looking to capture their teen’s senior year, sports achievements, or friendships, I always recommend a lifestyle approach that balances posed portraits with playful, candid moments. It’s in the in-between moments—the shared giggles, the pom-poms in mid-air, the blanket huddles—that the real story of friendship comes to life.
